VeganMoFo2019 Day 1: Intro & CAKE!

Hi, welcome to Vegan Month of Food for 2019, it's DAY ONE!

I am not following the prompts this year, I've gone rogue and created my own theme of "31 cakes in 31 days." I do have an intro video up which IS today's prompt, mostly it's to update you on our Hurricane Irma recovery (closing in on TWO years now... our house is nothing but an empty lot, but our beautiful vegan bed and breakfast, Deer Run, has risen from the ashes, and is BEAUTIFUL. We planned on reopening the booking page tomorrow, but .... as usual something else happened. Looks like it's Monday for us. Here's my video explaining it all, including why I had to shoot my own video today.

So, now that I've explained things, here's the bonus video I mentioned:

And, last but certainly not least.... today's cake! We have two!

Vegan carrot cake from The Cafe, Key West
THEIR CARROT CAKE IS FIRE!

Vegan "birthday cake" from The Cafe, Key West
(no it was nobodies birthday, it's just called "birthday cake" on their menu
Pro Tip: stick with the carrot cake

We went out to eat with friends a couple weeks ago, and ordered everything on the menu from The Cafe in Key West (kidding) but yeah, we ordered a crap ton of food. It was our friends first visit to the Cafe, which is an absolutely MUST go to when in Key West. So, these friends of ours are going vegan, and we wanted to take them to the Cafe for their first visit. Happy to report they loved it, I mean seriously you cannot go to the Cafe and leave disappointed, we are so lucky to have them local. It's exceptionally vegan friendly, and lately almost ALL their desserts are vegan which says a lot because they have a pretty big dessert menu too. The carrot cake is a staple on the menu, the birthday cake was new. The other happy vegan loves all things vanilla, and since essentially it's a vanilla cake, he wanted to try it. It looked pretty, but it needs some improvement. It was pretty much the only dessert we've ever had there that we felt didn't live up to potential. We appreciate that it's on the menu though. You cannot see the backside of the cake, but it was covered in beautiful hot pink sanding sugar. It really did look pretty. What we both wanted to order for our friends was the Cafe's banana cake with chocolate chips and peanut butter frosting, holy kale is that cake worth every damn calorie... sold out that night.

See you tomorrow. Vegan cake for the win, day #1 in the books.
